
Democratic voters will be choosing the challenger to U.S. Rep. Dale Strong in the 5th Congressional District race.
Republican voters in Morgan County will be choosing between the current sheriff and a former sheriff. Republican voters in Madison County will be choosing whether to replace a state representative with a former Congressman.
Those races may be the most intriguing in the Huntsville area on the May 19 primary election ballots.
Democratic voters in Madison, Limestone and Morgan counties will be choosing between Jeremy Devito, Candice Duvieilh and Andrew Sneed in the 5th Congressional District race to face Republican Strong on Nov. 3.
In Madison County, District 20 Rep. James Lomax is facing former Congressman Mo Brooks in the Republican primary for the State House. District 20 is in the southeastern part of the county and includes a part of Huntsville.
In Morgan County, incumbent Sheriff Ron Puckett is facing a challenge from former Sheriff Ana Franklin, whose tenure included a controversy over a loan she made from the inmate meal fund to a bankrupt used car lot and lawsuits involving a whistleblower blogger.
Here is a look at the races on are ballots:
Madison County
Madison County residents will have to wait until the Nov. 3 general election to vote on the office of sheriff, county school board superintendent and other county offices.
That is because the candidates for those offices do not face opposition during the Republican and Democratic party primaries,
Here is the list of candidates who have qualified for federal, county and legislative offices:
Sheriff: Republican Incumbent Kevin Turner will face Democrat Brett Jones in the general election.
Madison County Schools Superintendent: Democrat E. Quinn Headen will face Republican Keith Trawick in the general election.
Tax Collector: Republican incumbent Valerie D. Miles will face Democrat Jeff Taylor in the general election.
School Board District 3: Democrat Austin Jones will face Republican Brian Brooks in the general election.
Republican Tyler Berryhill is the only candidate who qualified in the coroner’s race. Republican Mark Craig is the only candidate in the license director’s race and Republican Cliff Mann is the only candidate in the tax assessor’s race.
Legislative races
State Senator, District 2 - Rudolph Valentino Drake, Alex House and Guy Sotomayor will face off in the Democratic primary. Republican John Roberts is unopposed for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Tom Butler.
State Senator, District 3 – Republican incumbent Sen. Arthur Orr will face Democrat John Dickey in the general election.
State Senator, District 7 – Republican incumbent Sen. Sam Givhan will face Democrat Jared Sluss in the general election.
State Senator, District 8 - Republican incumbent Sen. Steve Livingston will face Democrat Katie Kramer in the general election.
State Senator, District 9 – Republican incumbent Sen. Wes Kitchens is unopposed.
State Representative, District 4 – Republican incumbent Rep. Parker Moore will face Democrat Hanu Karlapalem in the general election.
State Representative, District 6 – Republican incumbent Andy Whitt is unopposed.
State Representative, District 10 – Democratic incumbent Rep. Marilyn Lands will face Republican Aaron Thomas in the general election.
State Representative, District 19 – Democratic incumbent Rep. Laura Hall will face Republican Donald Barnes in the general election.
State Representative, District 20 -Incumbent Lomax will face Brooks in the Republican primary. Democrat James Linderholm will face the winner in the general election.
State Representative, District 21 – Incumbent Republican Rep. Rex Reynolds will face Democrat Forrest Satterfield in the general election.
State Representative, District 22 – Incumbent Republican Rep. Ritchie Whorton is unopposed.
State Representative, District 25 - Allison Montgomery will face Damon Eubanks in the Democratic primary. Incumbent Republican Rep. Phillip Rigsby will face the winner in the general election.
State Representative, District 53 – Incumbent Democratic Rep. Anthony Daniels is unopposed.
Huntsville municipal election qualifying is later this year. City Council and Board of Education seats are on the ballot in Districts 2, 3 and 4.

Limestone County
There are no county offices on the ballot on the Democratic side. Limestone Democrats will also be choosing the nominee in the District 2 Senate race. They will also be voting on the nominee in the State House District 25 race.
On the Republican side, two county offices are on the ballot:
County Commission Chairman Collin Daly is facing a challenge from Scott Craig and Johnny Turner
Bill Bodin, Steve Garner and David Ruf are the candidates in the County Commission District 1 race.
Also on the ballot is the State Board of Education District 8 seat. Emily Jones, William Matthews and Connie Spears are running for the seat.

Morgan County
There are no county offices or legislative races on the Democratic ballot. That is not the case on the Republican side. The sheriff’s race between Puckett and Franklin is the highest profile race, but there are others to watch.
April Smith Hall, John Holley and Mark McCurry are seeking to replace retiring Amanda Scott as revenue commissioner.
Vaughn Goodwin, J.R. (Sonny) Westmoreland and Blake White are seeking the County Commission District 1 seat.
Daniel Gullion is facing Tracie Turrentine in the Morgan County Superintendent’s race.
Kenny Corder is facing Chris A. Humphries in the Morgan County Board of Education District 6 race.
There is one legislative race on the ballot. Kevin Davenport and Patrick Johnson are seeking to replace Terri Collins as the District 8 representative. The District 8 representative represents the northwest part of the county, including most of Decatur.
